Crafting in LotRO and why do I need it?

Quite a few times I saw people asking on the world channel questions along the lines of: what is the best profession/vocation for <class>?

Well, it's about time to disperse illusions related to crafting and vocations, and most important of all: your class has nothing to do with the vocation you should choose for yourself!

1. Cook - Easiest to raise to Doomfold, and one of more important professions. Regardless of level everyone should use food (Cooked, Fortifying and Trail), and with a little effort this food can be self produced. I would recommend leveling this on an alt and not on the main character

2. Scholar - Healing potions, power potions. We all chug these downs as if they were energy drinks (wait, they actually are energy drinks). Beyond the obvious ones, scholars make hunter/warden oils, hunter bow chants (you can't really raid without those), battle lore (can't raid without these either) and not to mention pocket items. Great profession for a main character.

3. Jeweler - Mostly items that will never get crafted except in end-game scenarios from one-off recipes. Definitely not a profession for a main character

4. Weaponsmith - Similar to jeweler. Nobody really uses the crafted weapons, even at low levels. Best left for an alt unless your main is a burglar and you absolutely have to craft the thrown weapons and tricks.

5. Metalsmith - Useless armour until end-game, RK chisels and riflers, and crafting tools. Still useless on the main character.

6. Woodworker - Minstrel instruments, warden carvings, ranged weapons. It can actually be useful on a minstrel or warden (just kidding, don't pick this one up on your main)

7. Tailor - Yet another profession that is not too useful on a main. You can make captain armaments, burglar signals, and nothing really useful

8. Forester - You can extract wood. Good for making gold

9. Prospector - You can extract ores - Even better for making gold

Now let's take a look at vocations:

1. Yeoman - Farmer, Cook and Tailor. Most people will level up farmer and cook, and do it on an alt who will remain level 40-ish forever (leveling up farming and cooking will take a fresh character to level 40-ish)

2. Historian - Farmer, Scholar, Weaponsmith. Most will level Scholar only, and actually my first choice for a main character

3. Explorer - Forester, Prospector, Tailor - Arguably the best money making vocation. Focus on forester and prospector and auction off stacks of 100 raw materials (processed ones rarely sell). Also the best vocation to level up Tailor

4. Armourer - Prospector, Metalsmith, Tailor - Leave it for an alt, and focus on Prospector and Metalsmith

5. Armsman - Prospector, Weaponsmith, Woodworker - Leave it for an alt, and focus on Prospector and Weaponsmith

6. Tinker - Prospector, Cook, Jeweler - Leave it for an alt and focus on Prospector and Jeweler

7. Woodsman - Farmer, Forester, Woodworker - Leave it for an alt and focus on Forester and Woodworker

For finale, let's talk about legendary items and professions that make them. In order to be useful making LI's, you need to max out your crafting guild reputation (already written about that one in the previous post)

Woodworker:

  • Beorning weapons (club, great club, spear)
  • Beorning carvings
  • Burglar weapon (club)
  • Captain weapons (club, great club, hammer, great hammer)
  • Champion weapons (club, great hammer, hammer, spear)
  • Guardian weapons (club, great club, great hammer, hammer, spear)
  • Hunter weapons (bow, club, crossbow, hammer, spear)
  • Lore-master weapons (staff)
  • Minstreal weapons (club)
  • Warden weapons (club, javelin, hammer, spear)
Weaponsmith:
  • Beorning weapons (axe, dagger, great axe)
  • Burglar weapons (dagger, mace, sword)
  • Captain weapons (axe, dagger, great axe, greatsword, halberd, mace, sword)
  • Champion weapons (axe, dagger, great axe, greatsword, mace, sword)
  • Guardian weapons (axe, dagger, great axe, greatsword, mace, sword)
  • Hunter weapons (axe, dagger, mace, sword)
  • Minstrel weapons (dagger, mace, sword)
  • Warden weapons (axe, dagger, mace, sword)
Tailor:
  • Bridles
  • Burglar tools
  • Rune-keeper Rune-bags
Scholar:
  • Lore-master books
  • Minstrel songbooks
Metalsmith:
  • Captain emblems
  • Guardian belts
Jeweler
  • Champion runes
  • Rune-keeper weapons (flint, icy, obsidian)
Cooks don't produce any legendary items, and the only reason to max out crafting guild reputation (which is actually super tedious for a cook due to the number of ingredients) is the crafted relic for a LI (didn't we say level 40-ish alt who only cooks?)

Crafting guild for dummies

How to maximize  reputation with your crafting faction with least possible effort?

It might be simpler than you think actually., without crafting every single day which is super boring and tedious.

First let's look at the numbers. We have seven tiers of crafting that allow us to craft reputation items:

  1. Expert
    1. Small - 300
    2. Medium - 900
  2. Artisan
    1. Small - 400
    2. Medium - 1200
  3. Master
    1. Small - 500
    2. Medium - 1500
    3. Large - 3000
  4. Supreme
    1. Small - 600
    2. Medium  - 1800
    3. Large - 3600
  5. Westfold
    1. Small - 700
    2. Medium - 2100
    3. Large - 4200
  6. Eastemnet
    1. Small - 800
    2. Medium - 2400
    3. Large - 4800
  7. Westemnet
    1. Small - 900
    2. Medium - 2700
    3. Large - 5400
This means that we can craft a total of 37800 reputation points in one day when everything is off cooldown (once a week).

To max out the Westemnet master, we need a total of 280,000 points, which means that we would need to craft once a week for 8 weeks, or craft every day for consecutive 17 days, using the formulas that were already published on the web.

If we add to the mix reputation acceleration tokens, we can effectivelly craft once a week for 75600 reputation points (using 38 small reputation acceleration tomes), and cut down the time needed to four weeks which is already a lot better.

How can we make this even shorter without crafting every day, well, we can add one more day of crafting a week, that will produce 16800 points (33600 when accelerated). With this added, we will have a total of 5 crafting days spread over 3 weeks. It would look something line this:

Sunday (week one): 75600 (total: 75600)
Wednesday (week one): 33600 (total: 109200)
Sunday (week two): 75600 (total: 184800)
Wednesday (week two): 33600 (total: 218400)
Sunday (week three): 75600 (total 294000) - more than needed for max

This scheme would require a total of 140 small reputation acceleration tomes.

Total bill of materials for each profession will come in future posts :)
